Agenda and minutes

1. General information
   • FP7: Network vs. Joint Research Activities
     • PG had a discussion with John Davies, OPTICON, during the IAU GA concerning FP7 and the options for applying for an implementation project. From this it seems that a Joint Research Activity would be more appropriate as the cost of an implementation related project would be significant higher than for a standard Network. There was general agreement on this and PG will indicate this to OPTICON. In any case, it is first expected that such a proposal would have to be ready by the end of 2007.
   • IAU GA
     • There were two presentation of our work during the IAU GA namely: 1) a talk by PG during the Comm. 5 meeting on 2006-08-16, and 2) a poster for the Special Session 6 on Astronomical Data Management. It is intended to submit a summary of the poster to the IAU proceedings.
     • BG noted that the deadline for submission to the proceedings of the IAU SPS may have expired. PG will check if this is the case (see action).
     • BC said that it may be good to approach computing at NRAO to brief them on our Network plans (see action).
2. ADASS'06
   • BoF
     • DT and PG submitted a request for a BoF at ADASS'06 which was accepted and will take place on Monday Oct. 16 at 19:30-21:00. DT will chair the BoF which will start with a few introductory presentations but allocate 45-60 min for discussions. At this moment we are considering the following presentations: 1) PG on scenarios for data processing, 2) DT on general proto-typing considerations, and possibly 3) a short account of the Milan-Marseille prototype.
   • Mini Face-to-face meeting Oct. 15 at ADASS'06
     • It is planned to have a small face-to-face meeting on Oct. 15 at 13:00 just before ADASS'06. It would be limited to 3 hours as the first Bof starts the same day at 16:30. Although only 4-5 Network participants from Europe are expected to be present, it seems important to take this opportunity to exchange views with the North American members. Main agenda points would be summary of past activities, plans for proto-types, review of architectural concept, establishment of an openSomething entity as an umbrella for the North American - OPTICON efforts, and proposals for actual implementations (e.g. through FP7).
   • Possible wide review of requirements
     • After the internal written review of the requirements a new version 0.91 was produced and posted on the DetailedHighLevelRequirements page. We have previously considered the option for a wider review e.g. through ADASS. The proposal is to mentions it in the announcement of the BoF. It would be a written review with a deadline by the end of 2006.
     • PL ask to have the TWiki planning page update (see action).
3. Proto-types
   • Reports on proto-type work
     • BG gave a short account on the progress concerning the Milan-Marseille prototype. Due to the vacations not much have happened. The discussions on benefits concerning dbus vs. OpenRTE continued. The was decided to add some more application to the current dbus based framework to gain more experience. PG noted that it was important to have proto-types for several software bus systems (e.g. dbus, OpenRTE) to ensure that interface specifications were neutral with respect the framework used for the actual implementation.
