Agenda and minutes

1. General information
   • FP7: Network vs. Joint Research Activities
     • There was an OPTICON executive meeting on June 22-23 during which plans for a possible FP7 application were discussed. We had submitted a proposal to continue our work as a Network but with additional funding to start an actual implementation (with 50% funding from EU).
     • The OPTICON executives recommended that we instead would make a Joint Research Activity which would better suite our purpose. At the same time OPTICON has sent requests for letters of intent to many organizations in preparation for a FP7 proposal next year.
     • PG will discuss the pros and cons with OPTICON during the IAU GA in August so we can make a modified proposal by end September.
   • Name for open standards body
     • During the face-to-face meeting it was decided that we should try to create a standards body related to a future software environment. It would be better to have it wider than OPTICON and more global (not strongly biased to a geographical region). One issue is the name and TD shortly mentioned the current state. It would be nice to have the naming issue resolved by end 2006 so the high-level requirements document could be included from the start. Such a standards body would mainly be looking after the standards and not be significantly involved in implementations although some interaction is likely as implementors may suggest changes and improvements. PG will open an TWiki page for a discussion (see action)
2. Requirements
   • Version 0.90 of high-level requirements
     • NC has submitted a list of typos which will be corrected. BG noted that requirements R2.2.x were not sorted. Further, she remarked that few requirements had been moved to the applications section. PG replied that he had been rather conservative in moving requirements and one may have to revisit this issue. In cases where a requirement both was applicable to applications and environment (e.g. scripting or execution framework) it had not been moved. BG promised to go through and possibly recommend some rearrangements. PG will update the current version to 0.91 on Aug. 01 (see action).
3. Presentation
   • IAU - Comm.5 (2006-08-16) and SPS6 (2006-08-22)
     • PG will give two short presentations at the Comm.5 meeting: one on our Network work and one on software patents.
     • We will also present a poster to SPS6 in order to be included in the proceedings. PG will draft it based on our two previous ADASS posters and current work.
   • ADASS'06 - BoF session
     • It was agreed that we (DT and PG) should request a BoF session during the ADASS'06 meeting to update people on our recent work (also related to proto-types) and discuss issues related to a future common software environment. The deadline for BoF proposals is Sep. 1.
   • Short face-to-face meeting at ADASS'06
     • DickShaw mentions in an e-mail that it would be possible to have a short face-to-face meeting during the early Sunday afternoon Oct. 15 just before the FITS BoF. PG will circulate an e-mail to check how many would be interested. He also will check if OPTICON would be willing to cover one night stay in Tucson for such a meeting (see action)
4. Proto-types
   • Reports on proto-type work
     • BG reposted that the Milan-Marseille prototype are re-discussing the pros and cons using D-bus vs. OpenRTE.
     • DT had some discussions with Ralph Castain (OpenRTE) on different types of parallel executions of tasks.
