Phone Meeting 2005-05-24 14:30 UT

Participants: BillCotton, BiancaGarilli, PrebenGrosbol, RichardHook, KlausReinsch, ChristianSurace, DougTody, KariVasko

Agenda and minutes

  1. General information
    • Status of odd references on our TWiki
      • The ESO web specialist identified them as 'spammers' and not 'hackers'. Although they pollute our TWiki, they do not pose a security risk. The situation will be monitored. If the number increases significantly, they will be removed and the registration be made more explicit.
  2. Face-to-face meeting June 23-24
    • discussion on tentative agenda for FaceToFaceMeeting20050623
      • The agenda start at 10:00 Thursday and terminates Friday 16:00 hoping it still will enable most people to arrive Thursday and leave Friday evening. We can still shift the times somewhat if many cannot make it to the start of the meeting.
      • The two main topics are:
        • High-level requirements: The intention is to prepare a version for final discussions during a number of phone meetings during June (see below). Once this is done, the requirements should be turned into a 'nicer' document as it is one of our deliveries to OPTICON.
        • Detailed architecture and design: We have agree on the architectural concept of the FASE but should start going into more detail with design, subsystem breakdown and interfaces. It is expected that some of the SAMPO people will come to ESO Garching in June and work on design issues. In this case, these consideration should be discussed on the meeting. Another development is the ALMA/AIPS++ proto-type which are working on moving AIPS++ into a similar architecture. It would be interesting to get some more detailed information at the meeting (see action).
  3. IVOA meeting
    • Summary of relevant items from the IVOA meeting
      • DT and RH gave a short summary of the IVOA meeting in Japan. This meeting is a IVOA coordination meeting (kept every 6 month) to align developments and make design decisions. There are several working groups but the one of most interest for us is on Data Access. The main topic was the Simple Spectral Access interface. A discussion on relations between these efforts and data analysis was intended but postponed, due to lack of time, till the next meeting which will be just after ADASS 2005.
  4. Requirements
    • Start of discussions on detailed requirements
      • At this moment 4 people (BG, DP, PG and PL) have volunteered to participation in the phone discussions on the detailed requirements. If other members are interested, it is still possible but the meetings will start during next week.
  5. Architecture
    • Choice of framework for proto-types
      • There were some discussion on the fase e-mail list on the choice of framework environment. MU suggested to use a public implementation of J2EE while several other people expressed concern due to its size and differences in objectives (J2EE is more aimed on commercial transaction problems than on handling heavy computational tasks). SOAP was mention as an alternative but since its mainly intended for Web services there may be performance issues. Finally, the ALMA/AIPS++ efforts were mentioned as it uses ACS/CORBA. Although it also is heavy, it is more language neutral (due to CORBA/IDL). In the end one would not like to bind a FASE implementation to a specific technology. The choice for a given proto-type would depend on the detailed requirements which should be elaborated on this point.
    • Priorities for proto-types
      • The agreement on the architectural concept may partly be due to its generic nature. Thus, it is important to proceed with more detailed designs, system structure and interfaces. Projects intending to make proto-types are encouraged do this so that one can compare different approaches. Further discussion will take place at the face-to-face meeting.
    • Minimum interface and implementation levels
      • There were not major comments to the fase e-mail on these topics. Thus the content will be moved to TWiki pages (see action).
  6. Actions
    • Status of open actions (see ActionList)
    • Summary of new actions (see below)
  7. Time for next phone meeting
    • Suggestion: 2005-06-21 14:30 UT (16:30 CET) or should we skip it due to the face-to-face meeting on June 23-24.
      • The only reason to have the phone meeting would be for people who cannot participate in the face-to-face meeting. The week before the meeting PG will check if there is a need (see action).
