Phone Meeting 2004-09-21 14:30 UT

Participants: VadimBurwitz, DavidGiaretta, PrebenGrosbol, JanneIgnatius, DanielPonz, DougTody

Agenda and minutes

  1. General information
    • Summary of ESO faculty discussion
      • The ESO faculty (with 30+ participants) had a discussion on the needs for a new data analysis software environment this Monday 2004-09-21. After some initial remarks by the chairman, PrebenGrosbol gave a short overview of our OPTICON Network. Four people had been asked to present views for and against such a new environment after which there was a general discussion. What I (PrebenGrosbol) personally took away from the meeting was:
        • Virtually all arguments made have already been voiced and are present on one or the other of our TWiki pages. That is I did not hear any strong new arguments either way.
        • The definition of environment was unclear to most of the people. UNIX was mentioned as a possible candidate for a data analysis environment. We must define in detail what we mean with environment
        • Most people felt that something more than what we have now would be needed but how much was unclear.
        • Several people argued for the minimum possible environment what ever that is.
      • The ESO project structure was shortly mentioned. There will be a project manager and a project scientist. The latter will establish a science team to give recommendation to the project. The team will interface to our Network, ESO faculty, and Finland. It would be good also to have the project scientist participate in our Network to close the loop.
    • Proposal to add Perry Greenfield and Kari Vasko as associated member
      • PrebenGrosbol proposed to add P.Greenfield (STScI) and K.Vasko (Finish project manager) to the list of associated members. The proposal was seconded. PrebenGrosbol will add them to the member list and e-mail lists if nobody objects by e-mail before 2004-09-29.
  2. ADASS
    • Discussion on draft poster AdassPoster2004
      • A page, AdassPoster2004, was initiated for the text to our poster at ADASS 2004. PrebenGrosbol will try to make the draft by 2004-10-05. Based on this text the poster will be made and discussed at the next phone meeting. A preliminary version may be provided to the iAstro meeting in mid-October.
    • Status of BoF request
    • Informal network meeting at ADASS?
      • They will probably only be around 5 people from the Network at ADASS so they may try to joint for dinner or the like but not meeting will be foreseen.
  3. Discussion on UserScenarios
    • Short discussion of scenarios and changes to them
      • Nothing was changed. It was decided to postpone further discussion to later when we have started on the high-level requirements.
  4. First face-to-face meeting
    • Final dates - the polling suggests 2004-12-02
      • The dates of the first face-to-face meeting were fixed to 2004-12-02/03 probably starting late in the morning to allow people to arrive in the morning. We will also aim to end not too late on Friday so people can get home that evening. The network will be able to support the members participation in the meeting. We have limit funding so we will do our best. People who have participated in the phone meetings will have priority.
    • Draft agenda
      • PrebenGrosbol will make a tentative agenda to be discussed at next phone meeting.
  5. Discussion of Scope-2 that is WhyNewEnvironment
      • Since BiancaGarilli was excused, it was decided to postpone the discussion to next phone meeting.
  6. Start considering LessonsLearned
      • A page on LessonsLearned was initiated. It gives links to pages for individual system. All are encouraged to add their comment on the systems they have used.
  7. Initiate definition of high level requirements
      • ThijsVanDerHulst and PrebenGrosbol will initiate the work on the high level requirement with the aim to have a first discussion a next phone meeting.
  8. Actions
    • Status of open actions (see ActionList)
    • Summary of new actions (see below)
  9. Time for next phone meeting
    • Suggestion: 2004-10-19 14:30 UT (still summertime?)
  10. Any other business
      • DougTody mentioned the framework effort done by NRAO/ALMA (see e-mail thread).

Please add what I have forgotten and correct my errors.
