Minutes of Face-to-face meeting 2006-10-15 P2H

13:00-13:15 Welcome: General information, adoption of agenda
- The meeting was called so that Network members who anyway were participating in ADASS 2006 could come together. Unfortunately, many of the North American members noticed the meeting too late and could not change they flight reservations.
13:15-13:30 Summary of activities since ADASS'05 meeting
- PG gave a very short account of the past activities since most of the participants regularly joint the monthly phone meeting over the past year. The summery and further topics of the meeting are available in f2f200610.pdf.
- It was agreed that the high-level requirements should go through a wide Internet review. Possible ways were discussed. An announcement through some major e-mail lists (e.g. ADASS and VO) should be considered (see action). Further one may consider to contact explicit organizations.
13:30-14:00 Plans for proto-typing activities
- BG gave a status report on the Milan-Marseille prototype project which use Python as scripting language, D-Bus as basis for the execution framework, and VIMOS pipeline modules as tasks.
- DT mentioned that he participated in a developers workshop for openRTE. It was very informative especially since the documentation still is somewhat lacking behind. There will be a new major release of openRTE some time this winter. DT expected to use that for a small prototype which he would start early 2007.
- The objective would be to get some basic prototypes ready for the spring of 2007 so the experience and interfaces could be discussed at the next face-to-face meeting (likely in Feb. 2007).
14:00-14:30 Creation of an 'open' umbrella organization
- It would be desirable to create an openSomething umbrella organization which would act as a keeper of documents, requirements, and specifications. This would be better that a specific entity like OPTICON which both has limit duration and geographic restrictions. Possible names should be considered (see action).
14:30-14:45 Consideration on an implementation phase 2008++
- We will by the end of the current Network (i.e. early 2008) have produced requirements, architecture, and basic interface specifications for a Future System. It would be reasonable to propose an actual implementation project for an OPTICON FP7 proposal. To do this, we also need a detailed workplan with task breakdown and time line. The creation of such a plan should be included on our to-do list and discussed at our next face-to-face meeting so that it could be ready by the late summer 2007.
14:45-15:00 Any other business
- The contacts with AstroGrid were too weak during the last year. We should use the ADASS meeting to re-start discussions with them (see action).
