The high level requirements for a Future Software Environment for astronomical data analysis are listed on this and subsequent pages. To make it easier to administrate the requirements, they have been separated into five groups:

• ScopeOfNetwork gives the top level aim for the network discussions
• HighLevelRequirements list what really is needed
• ArchitectureAndFrameworks defines the design concepts for the environment
• StandardAppsAndLibs defines what standard tools are needed
• AstronomicalApplications^? considers what astronomical applications are required

It is clear that there are many border cases where a point either could be placed in one or the other group. At this moment, the most important issue is to capture requirements so just add your requirements where you feel they should be. Don't either worry about duplications - it's better to have two similar ones than none of them. Even if you are not an official member of the network, you are welcome to voice your opinion and add issues.

In the fall of 2004, all requirements will be reviewed by the OPTICON Network N3.6 in order to establish a consistent list with priorities. This will then be used to start the work on design and specifications.
